Varagarisi ( Kodo Millet ) Puli Pongal



Ingredients:

  • Varagarisi - 2 cups
  • Tamarind - lemon size
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tspn
  • Salt - to taste

For tempering:

  • Oil - 2 tblspn
  • Mustard  - 1 tspn
  • Broken urad dal - 1 tspn
  • Channa dal - 1 tspn
  • Fried peanut - 2 tspn 
  • Dry red chilli - 12 nos
  • Asafoetida powder - 1/4 tspn
  • Curry leaves - few nos

Method:

  • Soak the tamarind in warm water and take 2 cups juice from it
  • Heat oil in a cooker add all the ingredients given under for tempering and saute after the dal turns golden brown add turmeric powder and tamarind juice, then add 4 cups of water 
  • After it starts boils add salt and rice and mix well
  • Close the lid and pressure cook for 5 to 6 whistle
  • Serve the tangy spicy tasty varagarisi puli pongal
